So Sad

Last week, I was in Salt Lake City for a few days at a Literacy Conference. I happened to drive by the old Snelgrove Ice Cream sign on 21st South while trying to find the 24 Hour Fitness in Sugarhouse. Boy, did that every bring back memories...

Of course, the huge ice cream cone doesn't rotate anymore, and the ice cream shop now houses Dreyers Ice Cream offices, since they bought Snelgrove a few years back. But, I still remember my brother working there and getting free sundaes with Canadian vanilla ice cream, whipped cream covered with extra cashews, a cherry on top held by a little plastic monkey. and a pitcher of hot fudge.

I also remember growing up with the Snelgrove family, always having Snellie ice cream bars in the freezer, and all the famous Snelgrove ice cream flavors: burnt almond fudge (with whole almonds); chocolate parfait; caramel cashew; German chocolate cake; lime sherbet; Canadian chocolate; peppermint chocolate spray; chocolate marshmallow; and caramel fudge. And then there were those extra special Snelgrove treats: frozen raspberry hurricanes; thick, thick, shakes; banana splits; and the huge glass bowl filled with enough scoops of ice cream feed a any hungry crowd.

It is so sad that Snelgrove Ice Cream is coming to an end. Dreyers won't be making any more starting this month, but you might be able to find some in an out-of-the-way grocery store somewhere...

How sad to see the end of an era! I wish the Snelgroves had been my neighbors growing up-yummy!!
