Tuesday Tips & Tricks

Honeycomb Keeps You Cool
During the dog days of summer, when you have to do something physically taxing in a location that is not air-conditioned, chew a chunk of honeycomb (available at health-food stores). You can chew it like chewing gum. (It's also OK if you swallow some.) The honeycomb actually causes a drop in body temperature, keeping you from feeling the heat.

Caution: If you have asthma or a known or suspected sensitivity to bee products, do not chew honeycomb.

Tuesday Tips & Tricks

Ceiling fans can really help ease your air conditioner's work load and save you a few bucks on cooling costs! For maximum effectiveness, choose a fan that's sized right for your room. Blade spans of less than 36 inches are for spaces smaller than 75 square feet, such as baths and breakfast nooks. Spans of 36 to 42 inches work in rooms up to 225 square feet, like a dining room. Larger living rooms and bedrooms can handle 50- to 54-inch blades.

Playground Pointers

Summertime is playground time,
so make sure your next visit to the local
park is a safe one by following these tips:

Forget relaxing with a good book. Lack of supervision accounts for 40 percent of playground injuries, so keep a close eye on your child at all times to make sure he or she is using the equipment properly.

Check for unsafe equipment.
Are the swings or slides damaged? Are the nets or ropes frayed? Does everything seem to be secured properly?

Keep your children in age-appropriate areas.
Don’t let young children play on the older children’s equipment; there’s a good chance they will be knocked down or otherwise injured.

Dress your child for the occasion.
Avoid jewelry, hoodies, and other loose clothing. Have your child wear a brightly colored shirt so you can easily pick him or her out of the crowd.

Mosquitoes

The best way to get rid of mosquitoes is
Listerine, the original medicinal type,
or the Dollar Store type works, too.

Testimonials:

I was at a deck party awhile back, and the bugs were having a ball biting everyone. A man at the party sprayed the lawn and deck floor with Listerine, and the little demons disappeared.

I filled a 4-ounce spray bottle and used it around my seat whenever I saw mosquitoes, and voila, it worked!

It worked at a picnic where we sprayed the area around the food table, the children's swing area, and the standing water nearby.

I tried this on my deck and around all of my doors. It works - in fact, it killed them instantly.

I bought my bottle from Target and it cost me $1.89. It really doesn't take much, and it is a big bottle, too; so it is not as expensive to use as the can of spray you buy that doesn't last 30 minutes. So, try this, please. It will last a couple of days.

Don't spray directly on a wood door (like your front door), but spray around the frame. Spray around the window frames, and even inside the dog house if you have one.

When the mosquitoes are out...
don't leave home without
the Listerine!!

Summer Reading

Why not make sharing books
part of your family's summer fun?

Along with swimming, camping, sports, barbecuing, and parades, don't forget to include daily reading. Children of all ages need to read or be read to every day during the summer months. When parents and children enjoy summer reading and book discussions together, children develop a love of books and reading that lasts a lifetime.
And don't forget to set the example of reading yourself...

Reading by the numbers...

25

The percentage of Americans who did not read any books last year.

1440
The year John Gutenberg invented the printing press.

20,000,000
The number of Americans who are illiterate.

3,100,000,000
