Baby Carrots

True baby carrots are very young carrots that are harvested while the vegetables are still quite tiny.

Baby cut carrots are made from larger carrots that are specially bred to be sweeter and more orange in color. These carrots are then pared down to a two-inch size by automated cutters.

It is currently accepted practice to use a chlorine wash on all fresh-cut, ready-to-eat vegetables as an antimicrobial treatment. They use the same thing in our drinking water.

However, I think it's wise to use real baby carrots, or gown-up carrots when making homemade baby food!

Not all baby cut carrots are washed in the safe chlorine solution, many organic and other growers use a natural disinfect called Citrox. Read more in the World Carrot Museum.
