On This Day, 224 Years Ago . . .
Wilhelm Karl Grimm (seated) was born.
Though he became famous with his older brother, Jakob Grimm, for their compilation folk and fairy tales, he and Jacob were in fact linguists and compiled the tales as part of their linguistic research. These tales (which include Rumpelstiltskin, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Hansel and Gretel) helped them to construct some of the oral history of the German people, and of surrounding areas. Celebrate Wilhelm Grimm's birthday by reading one of the Grimm brothers' classic stories!
