September is Coupon Month
Here's how these penny-pinching papers came into being...
- The first hand-written coupons, for free fountain drinks promoting Coca-Cola, were given out in 1894.
- Coupons soon spread to local grocery stores and supermarkets, eventually becoming their own industry during the late 1950s.
-The first National Coupon Month was in 1998. In 2000, the program expanded to help parents teach children about the importance of saving money.
-In 2008, 89% of consumers used coupons to save money, giving them about $2.3 billion in savings!
