Home Remedies That Work #9

Milk of Magnesia
Dabbing milk of magnesia on canker sores can soothe the pain of canker sores, or small ulcers, that typcically appear inside the mouth. This milky liquid won't heal the sores, but it does give relief from the symptoms. It's a good idea to first dab the sore with a mixture of half water and half hydrogen peroxide before applying the milk of magnesia. The milk of magnesia can also be mixed with an equal amount of liquid Benedryl to make a mouth rinse to help coat tissues and relieve pain. Swish the mixture and then spit it out.

Canker sores also have been linked to toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulfate, which can irritate gum tissues. Consider using brands that do not contain this chemical, such as Biotene or some Tom's of Maine varieties.
