I thought if maybe I knew more about watermelons, I might be able to pick one at the store that would earn a score of a perfect 10. That's how my husband rates them, and the highest I have ever gotten was a 5!!
So here are some interesting facts about watermelons...


A watermelon vine can produce a full-sized melon in just 90 days.

China has become world's leading producer of watermelon since being introduced to the fruit around the 10th century.

44 states in the US produce watermelons commercially.

The first know watermelon harvest was in Egypt nearly 5,000 years ago.

Most watermelons, by weight, are 92% water and 6% sugar.

Most watermelons have red flesh, but other varieties have yellow, white, orange, and pink flesh.

Watermelon is Oklahoma's state vegetable; the strawberry is their
state fruit.

During the Vietnamese New Year Celebration called Tet, the people roast watermelon seeds and eat them as a snack.

The first known occurrence of the word watermelon in an English dictionary was in 1615.

A recipe for pickled watermelon rind was included in the first United States cookbook published in 1776.

Watermelons will not ripen after they are picked. They can be stored uncut for about 10 days. Cut watermelons can last up to 4 days in the refrigerator is wrapped tightly in plastic.

In the 1950s, a Japanese scientest developed a system to produce the first seedless watermelons.
