How to choose a good, ripe watermelon
without sticking your head inside it...

The joke around our house is that if Mom picked the watermelon, don't bother eating it!! I think I have tried every trick in the book... Here are the ones I have used:
1. Make sure it is heavy for it's size.
2. Scrape the rind with your fingernail to see if it is a greenish white color underneath.
3. Thump it to see if it sounds hollow.
4. Look for creamy yellow spot where it sat on the ground while ripening.
5. Press on the stem end to see if it is too hard or too soft - it should give just a little bit.
6. Check to see if it is symmetrical with no bruises, dents, or cuts.
7. Make sure the skin doesn't have any soft spots.
8. The watermelon is ripe when there is little contrast between colors of the stripes.
