Blessed

Dale Beardall spent most of his life mowing lawns and shoveling snow for a living, but three years ago, he started building benches and selling them to people in his community.

Beardall builds the custom benches in his garage. A few days ago, someone broke into the garage and stole power tools worth more than $500.

Sean Nielsen, Beardall’s customer and friend, took to the Internet after the power tools were stolen.
He made a post on Facebook and a lot of people responded.

Nielsen set up a Facebook page for Dale’s Benches that generated more than 1,000 fans in less than 72 hours. Those fans have donated the tools needed to get Beardall back in business and they’ve been calling to order benches, helping him get money to get more stuff,” Nielsen said.

Blessed is the person who sees the need,
recognizes the responsibility,
and actively becomes the answer..

The Story of Kyle

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd.”

I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up, and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.

My heart went out to him. So I jogged over to him, and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, “Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives.” He looked at me and said, “Hey thanks!” There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before, but we talked all the way home, and I carried his books.

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes.

We hung out all weekend, and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him. Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, “Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books every day!” He just laughed and handed me half the books.

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, we began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem. He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.

Kyle was valedictorian of our class. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasn’t me having to get up there and speak.

On graduation day, I saw Kyle. He looked great. He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. He filled out and actually looked good in glasses. He had more dates than me and all the girls loved him! Boy, sometimes I was jealous. Today was one of those days. I could see that he was nervous about his speech, so I smacked him on the back and said, “Hey, big guy, you’ll be great!” He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled. “Thanks,” he said.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. “Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach — but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I am going to tell you a story.” I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his mom wouldn’t have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. “Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.”

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize its depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture, you can change a person’s life.

Hooker

I'm going to miss this good friend!! Our paths have crossed so many times throughout my life that I've lost track of the number. I taught some of his children. I worked with him in the old ER at Utah Valley when there were bar stools at the counter, and he let me do CPR for the first time on a real person... dead, but real. I helped him move the ER to the new building and saw many remodels after that. He shot my Achilles tendon full of cortizone on a Desert Practicum. We hiked down 6th Water on a dark and moonless night while he carried his daughter. I flew with him from Boulder, Utah to Escalante on an empty tank of gas. I never worried about flying with him because he had crashed so many times and survived that I knew he was an expert at it. I even flew with him over Boulder mountain as it was burning and saw how quickly a monstrous pine tree can be reduced to ashes. He got us all lost in the Burr desert one night when we were head instructors for a 30-day survival trip. I helped him drop flour, ice cream, and watermelons on wilderness groups.I worked for him at the EMS conferences for many years. He and my husband were on the Utahns on Everest Team. We introduced him and Nita to the Kipawa, and have shared many dinners together with that fun group of people. Yes, I'm going to miss my friend, Keith Hooker... a lot!!  Thanks for all the good memories - 'til we meet again...

Not Just Peanuts

Charles Schultz Philosophy...

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the Peanuts comic strip:

Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
Name the last five Heisman Trophy winners.
Name the last five winners of the Miss America Pageant.
Name 10 people who have won The Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
Name the last half dozen academy award winners for best actor or actress.
Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is that none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But, the applause dies, awards tarnish, achievements are forgotten, accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The Lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with
the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are simply the ones that care the most.

Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia... (Charles Schultz)

What To Do

Now that the weather is warming up, here is a list of
things you can look forward to doing outside
with your family and friends.
I found it here:

Swing in a hammock...

Snuggle close to to a family member and sway the afternoon away.
Look for pictures in the clouds and watch them change,
or read books to each other.

Do yard work together...

Pull weeds and mow the lawn together.
Plant and water the flowers,
then water yourselves.

Play dress-up...

Collect funny hats, gloves, purses, flowing gowns, and superhero
capes at a garage sale or thrift store. Slip into your new finery
and have a make-believe garden party, Spider-man
adventure, or masquerade ball.

Build a secret fort...

Drape old sheets over lower tree limbs and clotheslines.
Eat dinner there. Stay up chasing fireflies and
listening to night sounds.

Hold a car wash...

Line up dirty toy cars and trucks, or any other soiled waterproof
playthings and give them a good scrub in a pot of water, or
with the garden hose. Rinse and let dry in the sun.

Go on a bug safari...

Dig for worms, scout for lizards, and hunt for
frogs and tadpoles. Marvel at an ant
carrying an oversize crumb.

Befriend a firefighter...

Bake cookies or pick up some ice pops and deliver
them to your local fire station. The firefighters
will appreciate the surprise.

chalk it up...

Everyone loves sidewalk chalk. Use the glow-in-the.dark
kind so you can glimpse your artwork from
the window at bedtime.

Make beautiful music...

Spread a blanket in the backyard for a stage.
Invite neighbors to bring their
instruments and perform.

Dance in the rain...

Go outside during a gentle summer shower and dance
around catching raindrops in your mouth
and jumping in all the puddles.

HAVE FUN...
